I finally finished my newest work, Boy Centurions. I have been writing the eleven stories for over three years and then had to find an artist to bring the boys and their times to life. When Helen Looman turned in paintings that surpassed my expectations I realized I had zero skills in page design for childrens' literature and had to find a designer. God sent Heath Locke.

Each turn of the century from the year 1000 AD to Y2K introduces a new lad and his world. Packed with historical fact that is delivered painlessly through well crafted stories of real lives, this book is a cornucopia of learning that kids won't even notice they are drinking in. After the stories and art are pages of maps, trees, glossaries, and background on the boys and the larger events of their times.

Perspectives), Amsterdam (YWAM Frontier Mission Leaders Mtg), Oklahoma (Voice
of the Martyrs), Sweden (visit to Mongolia teammates and family), Hawaii
(teaching at two University of the Nations schools), Orange County CA
(Perspectives & biking with Louise’s sister), Malta (the GAP), Cedar Falls Iowa

get in a Christmas getaway. This is more time together (kid-free) on the road
than we have had in total in the two
decades since Mongolia. Even though most are working trips (and at least Brian’s
travel is paid for), we still manage to be overwhelmed with all of the fun
adventures and discoveries the Father has for us on every jaunt. God is good.

On November 12th, Brian will enter to Iraq for the
first time. The trip is exploratory in nature. God has been unfolding a dream
in our hearts to work together among the least, the lost, and the last, raising
up leaders of disciple-making movements and equipping local midwives to save
the lives of mommies and babies.

Recently we have been stirred to see if the
sprawling camps of Syrian (and other) refugees are fertile soil for what God
has put into our hearts and the talents He’s entrusted to us. Just after we
agreed to pursue this, God dropped a whole family of new cousins (Brian’s on
the maternal side) into our laps. The Pursley’s live just 14 miles from us, all
three of their kids are missionaries (Brian’s third cousins) and one goes in and
out of the camps in Northern Iraq.

Armed with inside information, Brian and a
young man named Zebulun are dropping into Kurdish-held Iraq to “spy out the land”.

the way forward to emerge.

move but rather shorter stays with a goal of being catalysts for grassroots movements.)

GAP – an Uzbek word meaning a “gathering of friends.”

In
YWAM’s Church Panting Coaches, when we say “GAP” we mean the un-conference
where church multiplication workers gather from fields across the globe to
spend a week together in refreshment, re-envisioning and sharing with their
peers.

These GAPs are among the most potent ways to serve the
church planters that we have found, and yet we haven’t been able to have one internationally
since 2006! Well, that sad record shattered on October 6th, 2015 on
the island nation of Malta as 21 precious GAPers began to arrive from
Mozambique, Tanzania, Indonesia, Central Asia, Thailand, Sudan, Palestine, Holland,
Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The gathering was everything we dreamed it would be. The
participants were “over-the-moon” in their praise and spoke of how much it had
exceeded their expectations – blowing away every conference they had ever attended.

We gathered at a wonderful resort on Malta’s St. Paul’s Bay.
One of the motives was to make sure that the workers – who live in fairly rough
and primitive conditions – would have a real week of restoration and rest.
Thanks to a generous grant from our partner Voice of the Martyrs we were able
to bring in a number of workers from persecuted nations who had never been able
to afford previous GAPs. We’ve always budgeted the GAP as cheaply as possible –
not making a cent – but international airfare still effectively limits
attendance. This time that obstacle was removed – praise God! Several of our
attendees had never before left their own nation or even flown on an airplane!

The first full day was a tour of Malta. The purpose was to
begin with an opportunity to meet and bond as almost all were strangers at
first. We began in the capital city, Valetta, with the Malta 5D – a multi-sensory
orientation and followed that with a walking tour of the medieval walled city. We
ate lunch in gardens on the battlements overlooking the Grand Harbor and left
when the historic cannons were fired toward Fort St. Angelo.

Then we walked to Mdina - a medieval walled town situated on a hill in the center of the island. Our group enjoyed exploring its silent and twisting streets and coffee and cake on the walls overlooking Malta’s most majestic views. Then it was back out the gates to our tour bus and off to Mosta where we toured the famous church and rotunda - the ninth largest unsupported dome in the world and the third largest in Europe.

Since our eyes could hardly take in any more beauty and history, we walked through town to the Horseshoe Bar to fill our bellies on a Maltese dinner of rabbit, braggioli (stuffed beef), or sea bream, depending on the person’s taste. The meal was amazing and so filling. We enjoyed eating and sharing until 9 PM and were more than ready to return to our resort and beds.

After that our days were a blend of excellent full-board buffet meals at the hotel, swimming in the surf or pools, gathering to discuss topics the GAPers had selected before arrival, worship and fellowship, sightseeing trips, and catching up on rest. The thing about a GAP is that there are no rules, you can do whatever you want at any time. People participate in the group sessions and activities because they are longing to share and hear about these things, not because they are “supposed to” – there is no speaker – the church planters themselves are the main event.

The conditions are spartan and the weather was HOT, but the
Spirit burned hotter.
I am so excited to hear the reports as these trainees go out after their SOFM and start to multiply churches.
Several who had already been in the field learned so much they were planning on starting over to plant
churches that reproduce like rabbits rather that the Western-style "elephant church" which has babies slowly if at all.
Thanks for your generous help in making this trip possible. These developing world schools can't help with
my travel (or anything) so it was a blessing to have the funds to say "YES" to this opportunity.

TANZANIA
Peter, Louise and I and all snugged into a single room in at the YWAM base in Mwandege, Tanzania
(just south of Dar Es Salaam). There are a lot of things we are missing (like reliable internet connections,
balanced diet, cool air, privacy, flush toilets, etc.), but God is taking care of us and Louise is thoroughly
enjoying her outreach in clinic and village. Peter and I are doing some school, and traveling into Dar and nearby places.
We hope to get to Mozambique to revisit the work there next weekend.
To send this out we had to ride two VERY crowded dallah-dallahs (Bus/vans) into the capital (Dar)
and found a hotel with decent internet.
Back at the base we use my mobile phone as a modem and it just barely downloads most of our incoming emails,
but often balks at sending out email. So we travel about 45 minutes to send and surf.
Being on an outreach team is a new experience for us - even though we have been in YWAM 18 years.
There are many challenges. Laying down our rights (like making decisions as a family, and going with what the
team leaders decide, is hard after so many years of adulthood and leadership).
Keeping Peter properly nourished and not bored is also an item for prayer.
Please pray for grace and an ability to live free in Christ under any and all circumstances.

Thank you for your prayers and your support.
Please send any gifts to us at:
LOS OSOS CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP
1335 Seventh St Los Osos, CA 93402
805 528-2140

just enclose a note saying "Brian and Louise Hogan support"
THANK YOU!!!!

Brian Hogan, for the three traveling HogansBrian Hoganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05122923456469321464noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8517839712988055641.post-87165260020423004602010-07-31T17:08:00.000-07:002010-07-31T17:21:47.367-07:00Australia's Far West<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_R4WrwntqDheV9pw1FKwWMgvAVJFGyMdbZjvEA93h9x_VTX0qKhpEsjRneED-9-64WqVGW4kMJEkRtN287p7WEreuYxOQQYMvb9Np_r7tzfgvsQSdRcHeg-Xczh_ls1M0Jr0_25RI66Lk/s320/GEDC0745.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500228873456032482" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEahYTF0B4Pc7FyleIA0PW51sGqZswhGN5oc2p20jBVmNo1LuWEPuExHt5Ix00SzLP-6M4O2cC0yJve4G7Ub-2cEpEamw2JzPUROSR4yxMbYiVUcM5HEjX2YZzu0u81ERJ98z5J6rK7fSU/s320/Perth+164.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500228863134840274" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUkJzfD6Hp88lKBq0_ce316MGLdZHpsVvf9Y0KWpNEJ9v_5d6qgjbSw6HMw5tsYktZPNRq45uy3W5dNzYe6ZC-wYCEXI1D7Iy_CUC4dM-sQZ-cVqbT85DUMEACjg0HE70EiiI_c08BtLH-/s320/GEDC0724.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500228853140654098" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO3JY2GpjutQoG9W_qFpZW4RTxBsfWLZRYoF9GvMSjA36XZQxkN0heTVTf4yMCQusGRZeee3mbHNWiz0Nb3pkBFRalP16xjLtTn_th5dqUl6f5oLl8JuDIQf5-tVgl5bzdChsQTv__tC3k/s320/GEDC0714.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500228839792618226" />
These days I am in Perth where my wife is doing a midwifery school. I spend my days taking my son about trying to cram education into him. We have been visiting the museums (natural history, historical, and art), the Perth Mint, and wildlife parks. We done drives north and south as some new friends were kind and lent us a car for the weekend. I especially enjoyed the "Last Days of Pompeii" exhibit at the Museum of Western Australia. I have always wanted to see that stuff they dug out of the ash.
I'll post a few representative pictures.Brian Hoganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05122923456469321464noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8517839712988055641.post-90328855711804534842010-07-22T22:31:00.000-07:002010-07-22T22:35:19.443-07:00The Wonderful Land of OzWe made it to Perth, Australia after a long series of flights from Burbank to San Francisco to Sydney . . . The Winter weather is really nice, not hot, more like Summer in McKinleyville, CA. Now we are trying to get mind and body back on the local time zone.
Before leaving the LA area I enjoyed my high school's 30 reunion. The high point, though, was an elementary school reunion breakfast at John C. Fremont in Glendale, CA. So fun hanging out with friends made in fifth grade!Brian Hoganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05122923456469321464noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8517839712988055641.post-25530687686153942192009-12-19T12:48:00.001-08:002009-12-19T12:48:34.834-08:00spring venue list

Brian Hogan’s Spring 2010 Speaking Engagements

<td style=" vertical-align:top; I have dreamed of being a midwife ever since the birth of Melody 24 years ago. I even apprenticed for a brief period with my good friend and midwife, Mishell Whitacre, not long after she assisted in Alice’s delivery. It was soon apparent that responding to the demanding needs of women in labor and caring for three growing human beings was incompatible. So I let the dream die. Then a few weeks ago, my friend Rachel came for a visit. She staffs the Birth Attendant School in Perth, Australia and was home for Thanksgiving with family. As we talked about her experiences with the school, the dream that I let go of so long ago came back to life. I didn’t say anything to anyone at the time; because I was so afraid it would kill the dream. When I finally told Brian what God was birthing (pun intended) in my heart, he enthusiastically agreed. No surprise there, he is always up for "Grand Adventures". So we are planning to rent out our house (with Molly as live-in manager and roommate) to students, and Peter, Brian and I will go to Perth in July. Brian will be able to continue our Church Planting Coaches ministry from wherever we are in that year and our ministry directors confirmed this adventure with us.

The school is three months of classroom teaching in Perth, followed by nine months hands-on in the Two-Thirds World (formerly known as Third World). Church Planting Movements take time to nurture and we are focused on training field-bound workers as the results from previous equipping begin to bear fruit. However, I just received a report that clearly shows the impact of timely church planting training.

<v:shape style="z-index: -2; position: absolute; margin-top: 18.1pt; width: 244.5pt; height: 186.75pt; visibility: visible; margin-left: -9pt;" id="Picture_x0020_1" spid="_x0000_s1031" type="#_x0000_t75" coordsize="21600,21600"><v:imagedata title="Stacey 077 (Small)" src="09_08Waves_files/image003.jpg"></v:imagedata><w:wrap type="square"></w:wrap></v:shape>You may remember my trip to Tamatave, Madagascar with Peter a few letters back? The opportunity came as a result of a GAP Gathering we put on for church planters in Malta in 2006. Victor and Jean-Marc (pictured at the GAP) came up from Madagascar and were overjoyed to discover that the things the Father had put on their hearts for Madagascar were shared by YWAM workers from all over the globe. They found a spiritual family at the GAP and became very excited by the principles of simplicity and rapid multiplication they heard us teach on in Malta. As a result they planned a church planting training for the workers in their clinic project and invited me to train there. Well, they all really caught it! A few churches had been planted along with the village clinics before the training but the model was pretty traditional and non-reproductive. When the realized that they could plant hundreds or thousands of simple reproducing churches with less effort and expense than planting a few traditional building and program based churches, there was no holding them back. Not that we wanted to!

What follows is a report of what has been taking place down there, written by Jean-Marc’s wife. It can be read in full with photos in the August 2009 International YWAMer.

The Whole Gospel: A Holistic Approach to the Communities of Madagascar

I was finding out about my new country. After more than 20 years in sub-Saharan Africa, I was going to live on the east coast of Madagascar, one of the wettest areas in the world: an area where 90% of the population lives in rural areas and where no-one has access to clean drinking water. Use of latrines is just about non-existent. 80% of people are so isolated, living up in the mountains or deep in the bush, that they have no access to basic healthcare services.

The sadness in the villages was striking. It seemed as if the only times of feasting and celebration were the annual visits to the tombs to re-clothe the dead when ancestors' remains are removed from the ground, washed, put back into shrouds and carried in a long procession amidst cheers and acclamations. Cows are sacrificed in order to gain the favor of the ancestors: one of the rare occasions in the year when meat is eaten. How could we bring about change, a lasting development and see the Kingdom of God being established in these villages?

That was March, 2004. We had just done a presentation to the Malagasy government of a community healthcare program for the Tamatave region and were officially starting up an NGO called Mercy Ministries in the country, supported by the YWAM Mercy Ministries office in Switzerland. Along with my family, I was joining a small team of 3 Malagasy YWAMers in the area.

This is "Mission Impossible," we were told again and again in the first two years! It will be impossible to see these simple rural folk taking the responsibility themselves and for their health and development! Impossible for them to work together! Impossible for them to change their way of thinking! ...

But God is so passionate is about seeing these villagers getting to know Him, passionate about them having a better life; passionate about seeing His Kingdom manifest to the ends of the earth. So He made it possible.

5 years later, through the work of YWAM Tamatave/Mercy Ministries: 100,000 new people have access to primary healthcare service.

Where sick people used to have to walk for 2 days to receive care, often dying en route during the grueling journey; today they are able to receive care in their own villages with some amazing results. 23 clinics have been set up in very remote areas with the active involvement of the indigenous community. Agricultural folk have been trained as primary healthcare workers by YWAM/Mercy Ministries. Others have been trained to educate the villagers on hygiene, development and good management.

The results in terms of health have been so obvious, that our project was the inspiration in 2008 for a new national policy, based on the principle of local communities taking charge of their healthcare. In a culture where so much fear and suspicion exists, we have to work very carefully to create the right atmosphere for people to learn and to change their thinking and their hearts. We combine stories about health issues, games, and skits with times of sharing, Bible stories and praying... and barriers fall. The more the villagers realize that God is concerned about their health and development and that He has set out principles to follow in these areas, the more their hearts open up and then they ask us to come in and help them understand His Word.

Many of those who believed in the Lord and decided to obey Him have started meeting together in their villages and have started up churches. The first 25 churches which started in this way are in the process of forming other churches and thus a church-planting movement has begun. Leaders and churches which are concerned about global development, as much spiritual as physical, are bringing about visible changes in these villages.

We have realized how committed God is, working alongside His children, to the battle against poverty and disease. We cannot achieve the impossible on our own - we work in partnership with the Ministry of Health, other NGO's and business people. When we started, malaria was the main cause of death in our area but it has now dropped down to third place. We are grateful for these partnerships and appreciate their input, as they allow fruitful change to occur and this allows the Kingdom of God to advance as well in other areas of society.

What's next? After 25 years of field work in community health, I have realized that I can do this and therefore I have a responsibility to pass it on - to train up those who can, in turn, train up others and I am busy setting up curriculums which incorporate Biblical principles that others can use in the country. After our uncertain beginning, it gives me great joy to see other people using these tools, including many in the government itself.

It is our privilege to speak about Salvation in Jesus. When men and women are taught to live according to Kingdom of God principles in the different areas of society and to become disciples of Jesus, we will see nations transformed.

"Biblical" community development and church-planting work hand-in-hand, complementing each other perfectly. But do the same thing with two rabbits and you’ll get 476 million baby rabbits.

In their new book, The Rabbit and the Elephant: Why Small is the New Big for Today’s Church, simple church planters Tony and Felicity Dale, with acclaimed researcher George Barna, use the rabbit illustration to show the pace at which the Christian faith can (and should) be growing—through a way of life that is explosive and transformational. Through observations supported by the Barna Group research, the Dales document how church all across the world is changing from being event-based to life and relationship-based.

The Rabbit and the Elephant explores the simple church phenomenon and the ideas and experiences behind its concept of every member ministry. You will learn how to incorporate spiritual growth and outreach into every aspect of your life, while discovering the key to 21st century evangelism.

You can order the book from Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Rabbit-Elephant-Small-Todays-Church/dp/1414325533/ref=nosim?tag=thestarbree-20Brian Hoganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05122923456469321464noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8517839712988055641.post-72240791400431814262009-03-02T17:15:00.000-08:002009-03-02T17:19:04.548-08:00F.M.Waves Spring 2009
<span style="line-height: 115%;font-family:";font-size:15;" >Spring shows what God can do with a drab and dirty world

<span style="line-height: 115%;font-family:";font-size:8;" > <span style="line-height: 115%;font-family:";font-size:10;" >~Virgil A.
