Just a quick plain-text update from the Hogan family in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
Louise, Peter and I are reunited after a couple weeks apart while I trained church
planters in Bangladesh, and Louise finished up the classroom phase of her Birth Attendant training in Perth.

BANGLADESH
What an awesome opportunity to be able to train YWAM's first Bangladeshi frontier missionaries in 12 years!
I had 26 students and they were so receptive. The conditions are spartan and the weather was HOT, but the
Spirit burned hotter.
I am so excited to hear the reports as these trainees go out after their SOFM and start to multiply churches.
Several who had already been in the field learned so much they were planning on starting over to plant
churches that reproduce like rabbits rather that the Western-style "elephant church" which has babies slowly if at all.
Thanks for your generous help in making this trip possible. These developing world schools can't help with
my travel (or anything) so it was a blessing to have the funds to say "YES" to this opportunity.

TANZANIA
Peter, Louise and I and all snugged into a single room in at the YWAM base in Mwandege, Tanzania
(just south of Dar Es Salaam). There are a lot of things we are missing (like reliable internet connections,
balanced diet, cool air, privacy, flush toilets, etc.), but God is taking care of us and Louise is thoroughly
enjoying her outreach in clinic and village. Peter and I are doing some school, and traveling into Dar and nearby places.
We hope to get to Mozambique to revisit the work there next weekend.
To send this out we had to ride two VERY crowded dallah-dallahs (Bus/vans) into the capital (Dar)
and found a hotel with decent internet.
Back at the base we use my mobile phone as a modem and it just barely downloads most of our incoming emails,
but often balks at sending out email. So we travel about 45 minutes to send and surf.
Being on an outreach team is a new experience for us - even though we have been in YWAM 18 years.
There are many challenges. Laying down our rights (like making decisions as a family, and going with what the
team leaders decide, is hard after so many years of adulthood and leadership).
Keeping Peter properly nourished and not bored is also an item for prayer.
Please pray for grace and an ability to live free in Christ under any and all circumstances.

Australia's Far West

These days I am in Perth where my wife is doing a midwifery school. I spend my days taking my son about trying to cram education into him. We have been visiting the museums (natural history, historical, and art), the Perth Mint, and wildlife parks. We done drives north and south as some new friends were kind and lent us a car for the weekend. I especially enjoyed the "Last Days of Pompeii" exhibit at the Museum of Western Australia. I have always wanted to see that stuff they dug out of the ash.
I'll post a few representative pictures.

We made it to Perth, Australia after a long series of flights from Burbank to San Francisco to Sydney . . . The Winter weather is really nice, not hot, more like Summer in McKinleyville, CA. Now we are trying to get mind and body back on the local time zone.
Before leaving the LA area I enjoyed my high school's 30 reunion. The high point, though, was an elementary school reunion breakfast at John C. Fremont in Glendale, CA. So fun hanging out with friends made in fifth grade!

The Next Grand Adventure

I think I will start with punch line first. We are moving to Perth, Australia.

I know it seems sudden but in reality it is not. I have dreamed of being a midwife ever since the birth of Melody 24 years ago. I even apprenticed for a brief period with my good friend and midwife, Mishell Whitacre, not long after she assisted in Alice’s delivery. It was soon apparent that responding to the demanding needs of women in labor and caring for three growing human beings was incompatible. So I let the dream die. Then a few weeks ago, my friend Rachel came for a visit. She staffs the Birth Attendant School in Perth, Australia and was home for Thanksgiving with family. As we talked about her experiences with the school, the dream that I let go of so long ago came back to life. I didn’t say anything to anyone at the time; because I was so afraid it would kill the dream. When I finally told Brian what God was birthing (pun intended) in my heart, he enthusiastically agreed. No surprise there, he is always up for "Grand Adventures". So we are planning to rent out our house (with Molly as live-in manager and roommate) to students, and Peter, Brian and I will go to Perth in July. Brian will be able to continue our Church Planting Coaches ministry from wherever we are in that year and our ministry directors confirmed this adventure with us.

The school is three months of classroom teaching in Perth, followed by nine months hands-on in the Two-Thirds World (formerly known as Third World). At this point we do not know where the outreach will go, but we will keep you posted.

With all our previous "Grand Adventures" the germinating idea has come from Brian, and for the most part I willingly followed. This one is different, this is my crazy idea and Brian is willingly following. It feels good.

We really feel like God is preparing us for ministry in church planting AND village health care in the future. It will be so exciting to add the fruit of my coaching training and midwifery to the package we offer the church planting teams.

Please pray for us as we figure out how to make this happen over the next 6 months. Pray that all the necessary finances come in as well.

Spring shows what God can do with a drab and dirty world

Spring means lots of travel for me and lots of work for Louise. Teaching Christian History and Church Planting in “Perspectives on the World Christian Movement” (offered all over the USA) has me away for half of most weeks January through May. I am one of the most sought-after Perspectives instructors because of our Mongolia story and being one of the authors of the textbook, so my dance card fills quickly. Back in McKinleyville, Louise not only keeps hearth and home together, but works at a fever-pitch on her art to keep me stocked with the greeting cards that sell so well at classes. Check them out at: OrganicGreeting.com. Amazingly, amid all the chaos, everything gets done and our family seems to be doing better than ever. There is a God and He loves us!

It is funny how the teaching opportunities line themselves up. Fall seems to be all foreign travel and spring is mostly domestic. I taught in Columbia, Taiwan, British Columbia, Jamaica, Lebanon, and Texas (well, they think it’s a country!) during fall. Check out the photo albums. Just one story from Lebanon: I had the intense privilege of baptizing an Iranian girl, a Muslim follower of Jesus, in the Mediterranean. She had received numerous visitations in dreams from Isa (Jesus’ name in Arabic) and He discipled her. He appeared to her family as well. The entire family has followed her into the kingdom, and sent her to Lebanon for training. What an amazing God we work with!

Kid news

Molly is living with my parents in Atascadero and attending Cuesta College’s culinary school.

Melody and Luke are moving to Sacramento for work. Melody is already working there and Luke is interning with Caltrans, coordinating Perspectives, and finishing up school here. We will miss them.

Alice turned 18 today (March 1, 2009). She is looking for a car to attend college in San Luis Obispo.

Peter is navigating early adolescence with humor and . . . well, like Peter!

I’m in the middle of a great book right now…check it out…

“There’s a Sheep in my Bathtub” - Birth of a Mongolian Church Planting Movement - by Brian Hogan

I met Brian about a year and a half ago in Dallas, Tx. He took my wife and I to lunch, and insisted I read the book, “The Shack”. So, he bought the book for me right there on the spot! He told me about this book he was writing about his time in Mongolia as a missionary with his family. I shrugged it off, and we exchanged emails. I bought his book a few weeks ago after he posted a Facebook comment about a discounted price. =) A week later he had a layover in Vegas, and we spent a few hours together. This man is brilliant. I’m halfway through the book, and it is incredible. Not only is it full of amazing stories of life overseas, but it fleshes out basic “Church Planting Movement” principles. Brian takes all of the things I just read about in David Garrison’s book, and shares how they naturally played out in Mongolia as they pursued equipping believers to make disciples. Out of Africa
Peter Magnus traveled with dad to Southern Africa this summer. The month-long trip began with a week in the Johannesburg, South Africa area, where we stayed with Kingdom People house church leaders, experienced Boer culture and the car safari of a lifetime at Pilanesberg Game Park, as well as wonderful fellowship with the believers.
Next we flew north to Mozambique. We “couchsurfed” a wonderful British couple in Maputo, the capital, then continued on north to a Yao encampment called Itepela, a remote tribal village mostly comprised of mud, and home to one of our teams as well. The Yao are an unreached Muslim group who centuries ago were the region’s slave traders. We spent one week training church planters in a School of Frontier Mission in the village, and then another week continuing the same training on the shore of Lake Niassa. When I taught on baptism, several students indicated that they had not yet been baptized. We held a baptism and communion service in the lake without delay!
Then it was east to the island of Madagascar . . . it didn’t begin well though. We took the longest and least comfortable bus ride of our lives to get from Antanananarivo, the capital and largest city, to Tamatave, the coastal town where I was teaching church planters. After we arrived it was great. The sound of the nearby breakers provided an auditory backdrop to a very special place and people. The ministry in Mozambique is cutting edge missions. YWAM starts medical clinics in remote villages and plant churches as they train workers for the clinics. Our personal highlight was a trip Peter and I took all by ourselves in a borrowed car. We went to a zoo-park that had lemurs everywhere. They would come and sit on us begging for bananas. We also hiked to a secluded waterfall and went swimming.

Fledglings
Molly and Jonathan Leatherwood are no longer pursuing a “special relationship”. Molly is moving south to live with her grandparents in Atascadero and attend culinary school. Jon is moving from Humboldt County to Texas with his twin David to work with Living Water, International - a well drilling mission organization. We have enjoyed having all of them around for awhile, anyway.
Melody and Luke have become coordinators for the course Perspectives on the World Christian Movement. They want to mobilize their generation for the unreached. The coordinating team has planned a Humboldt County Perspectives class for Spring 2009. We have a terrific bunch of speakers lined up by Brian at the Perspectives National Conference several months ago in Dallas.
Peter and Alice are both doing great in school (thanks, God!). Alice is working hard at a restaurant and cheerleading, while Peter is enthusiastic about electronic gaming and his band of friends.
The Church Planting Coaches ministry: Kevin and Laura Sutter are in India now about a third of the year, leaving us to man the main office. We just overhauled and updated the ministry website www.cpcoaches.com – be sure to click it! Our other major project has been a complete DVD Church Planting Seminar that takes our whole training and makes it available to places we can’t go. Parting thought . . .
Recent events seem to have a lot of folks starting to panic. We can all relate to that temptation. I have been taking a great deal of comfort and peace from the knowledge that my citizenship is in heaven. No matter who wins next month, I am staying under Current Management. It is also great to know that our provision is not tied to this nation’s (or world’s) economy – bull or bear – but to my Dad’s rich generosity and loving care. Sure there with be tribulations – but be of good cheer! – He’s overcome this world and its systems. Don’t worry. Be happy. You are loved!

Long Awaited Newsletter at Last!

As unforgivable as a five month gap in newsletters may be (and I do apologize!) I may have an acceptable excuse. After a decade of writing (and periodic bouts of writers’ block) I have a BOOK to show for my efforts! In the push to finish it and get it into print, the print version of our newsletter languished. We also lost our mailing service of the past 14 years, Calvary Missionary Press (we praise God for their many years of service to His workers and wish them a wonderful retirement!), so that added a bit of chaos. But we feel that a 272 page book loaded with illustrations (58 of them) ought to make up for a year with only two FM Waves. (By the way, if you are on our emailing list you have gotten quite a few more updates. If you are not getting these just send me an email.

About Brian P. Hogan

BRIAN HOGAN earned his Master’s in Ministry from Hope International University (Fullerton, CA) specializing in Intercultural Studies. He is a sought after speaker, trainer and coach. Brian serves full time with Church Planting Coaches; a global ministry of Youth With A Mission. He enjoys being a catalyst, hanging out, finding swimming holes, reading books, traveling and trying anything new, novel, and different.

Brian has participated in, led, and started organic expressions of Jesus’ Body in the USA, Malta, and Mongolia both inside and outside the traditional church wineskin. He coaches those involved in these movements on five continents, especially focusing on where the church isn’t.

He is also the author of “Distant Thunder: Mongols Follow the Khan of Khans” which is featured as a case study in Perspectives on the World Christian Movement: a Reader (1999; William Carey Library). Brian’s training course Keys to Church Planting Movements is available on CD-Rom through Church Planting Coaches (www.cpcoaches.com). A DVD workshop is also available.
